This site has been designed by Martial Artists for all Martial artists. The purpose of this website is to inform primarily students of Tenshin Ryu swordsmanship of forthcoming sword events and gradings and to be a reference for this style of swordsmanship but it is also envisaged that this site will grow to become a valuable source of information for all students of martial arts and to incorporate links to other styles of swordsmanship.

Tenshin Ryu has a documented lineage dating back to the legendary Ogawa Kinnosuke 10th Dan swordmaster, please refer to our History page for more detail.

Tenshin Ryu Iaido is a style of swordsmanship like many others proved in ancient battles during Japans fuedal past. the lessons learnt and the principles observed have been passed down the ages. Iaido is now praticed as a form of self development and to come to an understanding that all combat is immoral. The term "Saya no uchi" implies victory without drawing the sword. Iaido is the search for perfection in movement, one can practise an entire lifetime and still find fault, this is how it should be. It is the path one follows that leads to a greater understanding of swordsmanship and ultimately of life. For more info go to the Iaido page.

Iaijutsu is the other side of the coin, Iaijutsu requires of the practioner development of the mind alongside demanding forms. the emphasis is on speed and fluidity and total commitment as in a live/die situation, the warriors spirit must be strong. For more info go to the Iaijutsu page.

The Tsunami Yodokan Dojo is the home of Tenshin Ryu Iaido and Iaijutsu and is located in the Shirley Comunity centre, Shirley, Croydon. The club is run by Sensei Mike Selvey 6th Dan Kyoshi. Classes take place every tuesday evening from 7.30 to 9.30. A new club is opening in the new year in Maidstone Kent. For more info go to the Clubs page.

The Tsunami Yodokan and all its members are affiliated and registered with the DNBK ( Dai Nippon Butoku Kai ) Japans oldest Martial Arts society. The Dai Nippon Butoku Kai was originally established in Kyoto Japan 1895 under the authority of the Ministry of Education and the endorsement of His Royal Highness, Meiji Emperor to solidify, promote, and standardize martial disciplines and systems throughout Japan.
